Major General Naveed Zaman's brother-in-law dies in terrorist attack

Major General Naveed Zaman's brother-in-law, a serving Army brigadier and his driver were gunned down here early on Thursday, 22-Oct-2009 while his gunman was critically wounded. Two motorcyclists intercepted his official jeep in Sector G-11/1 and sprayed it with automatic fire.

The incident occurred at 8:32am when Brigadier Moeenuddin Ahmad was on his way to his office in his military jeep along with his driver Havaldar Asghar Ali and gunman Sabir Ali. Two motorcyclists intercepted the jeep near Street-5 and opened indiscriminate fire at the vehicle. The jeep was hit from three sides. The attackers then sped away towards the residential area of the sector.

According to a witness, the attackers first burst the tyres of the jeep before targeting the riders. “The jeep collided with a tractor trolley as it went out of control after the driver was hit in the head”. The hail of gunfire left the front and back windows of the green jeep riddled with bullet holes.

The police said that over 50 empties were recovered from the scene, including bullets of SMGs and 30-bore pistols. Around 11 shots were fired at the front screen of the jeep. Brigadier Moeen was on a UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan and had come to Pakistan on leave as his father-in-law, Sardar Bahadar, had died in Islamabad on October 15, 2009. The brigadier was going back to Sudan on Sunday. His brother-in-law, Major General Naveed Zaman (19th Entry) holds a key position in the military operation in South Waziristan.
