"This disaster is worse than the tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the Haiti earthquake," Maurizio Giuliano, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in one his statements, commenting on the worst floods that Pakistan has seen in the last 62 years. Close to 14 million people have been affected by the floods so far, while it is difficult to put any number once the water subsides, and people try to take stock of their lives. Dr. Babar Zaheer ud Din (11th Entry) sent an email to us with some pictures of the flood. These are 41 pictures in all and may be seen at boston.com. There are indeed many other websites, which show more pictures, telling the story of this huge calamity that has befallen just a few days prior to Ramazan. While many of our Alumni are physically working on the ground, doing a duty for humanity, the whole Abdalian community is saddened by the tragedy and the losses that have come about due to it. |

While the Abdalians Association has put up a flood relief request on its web site, not much is being seen to be done in organizing the relief towards the affectees, unless it being kept as a closely guarded secret. One of the problems is the large spread of the disaster throughout the length and breadth of the country, where the Association may not have an outreach. It is felt that the HOBA Management should immediately call an emergency session of the Executive Committee and involve Abdalians at all levels to develop a relief plan. This plan should then be disseminated to the community by each and every means that is available to the management, so that it may be executed in an efficient manner. Ofcourse, the bottomline in this whole affair will be to show those leadership qualities, for which we so proudly claim to be Abdalians. If you have a story to tell us, please send us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. To look at some more compelling pictures you may visit PBS Newshour. Watch out for that lady in wheelchair, submerged in water. |
