The Annual General Meeting and the Annual Get-together was held today (Sunday, 25-Jan-2009) at Cadet College Hasanabdal. This year the attendence was very low compared to the last few years, which has been on the decline. The President, Syed Ashfaq Hussain specially mentioned that the attendance of 50-60 people is abysimal. The event started with the dua at the monument with a very few people present there. The slight drizzle shifted the venue of registration from the lawns in front of the Staff Room to the new library. One of the reasons attributed to the low attendance is that this year there were no elections. The old boys were served with tea and biscuits in the library, while some of them were seen busy catching up on old times at the steps of the Education Block. This year a fresh change was also witnessed as the usual VIP Car Park and General Car Park direction boards were not seen upon entering the College premises. As a result the area designated for parking was infront of the College hospital. After registration and the dua, the old boy's proceeded to Naeem Hall to participate in the formal proceedings of the Annual General Meeting. The AGM started with the recitation of the Holy Quran which was followed by the Principal's welcome address. It was a good sight to see a formal presentation made by the Principal which touched topics like achievements of cadets in academics and capitals works undertaken by the administration. The audience noted with concern that the academic results of the College were on the decline in the usual disciplines of medical and engineering. The O-Level results, however, showed year-on-year improvements. |

The Secretary General, Capt. (Retd) Nayyar Islam gave the report of the Associations activities during the year. Earlier, he put forward a resolution in front of the House to approve the minutes of the last AGM, which were approved by the members immediately. He also referred to the issue raised because of the Principal's letter on the subject of keeping of beards by cadets by asking the House to stand and recite the Darood Sharif. He also presented before the House the cash and bank balances as at 30-Jun-2008, although the requirement of such an event is the presentation of the audited accounts. As the Secretary Finance was not present due to a personal committment, the Secretary General laid the balances before the House.
The President, Syed Ashfaq Hussain gave an emotional speech and asked Abdalians to be more active in their intra-networking activities within the community. He specially mentioned the low turn-out at the AGM and the last dinner function held at Lok Virsa. He also emphasized the point on keeping of beards and said that this notice should be withdrawn by the College administration. The whole debate started because of a letter written by the Principal to all the parents informing them that cadets may not keep or grow beards during their stay at Cadet College Hasanabdal. However, the part that most hurt the sentiments, was the sentence that in case parents had a religios compulsion, they should not send their sons to Cadet College.
But the speech of the day was made by Mr. Ijaz Shafi Gillani on this subject. Ijaz Gillani is from the 8th Entry (1961) and his speech portrayed the sentiments of the audience in the hall. He said, he "felt insulted" by the contents of the Principal's letter. He also announced a scholarship in the name of his mother to the tune of Rs. 0.5 million for a five year duration. Others who also spoke on the matter were Sohail Rabbani, Tariq O. Rehman, Shoaib Shafi, Hasan Shafi, Imran Aziz, Jamil Malik and Gen. Sikandar.
The AGM was followed by lunch in the dining halls due to uncertain wether conditions. There was a basketball match between the old boy's and the cadets, which also was cancelled due to bad weather. Pictures of the Annual Get-together will be published shortly and members may access them through the Picture Gallery.
