Engr. Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani assumed the charge of acting Chairperson, Higher Education Commission (HEC) a few days ago. Imtiaz Gilani is a Pakistani civil engineer and was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology (Peshawar) from 2004 till earlier this month. The University has grown leaps and bounds during his tenure and has established itself as one of the leading institutions in Pakistan. Imtiaz Gilani has also served as a Minister for Education, Information, Youth, Tourism and Culture (1999-2003) and as the acting executive director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan (2012 - 2013). Mr. Gilani ranks among the top educationalists in the country.
The Chairperson of the Higher Education Commission has the status of a Federal Minister of State and serves as the Chairperson of the meetings of the Commission, and Chairperson of the Board of Governors. In the role as Head of the HEC, the Chairperson oversees all the activities and sets the policy direction of the organization. In his role as Federal Minister, the Chairperson plays a critical role in coordinating with the Government to ensure that Higher Education plays a central role in the development strategies of the country.
Imtiaz Gilani was born in Kohat and spent his formative years studying in St. Joseph's Convent School in Kohat. From 1959 to 1964 he then studied at Cadet College Hasanabdal. In 1964, he attended University of Engineering and Technology (Peshawar) and completed his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 1968, after, which he did his Master's in Structural Engineering in 1969 and specialized in structural engineering in 1971 from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. In 1978, he attended Rutgers University in which he did his Master of Business Administration in Finance.
Imtiaz Gillani's other brother, Zulfiqar Gillani also happens to be an Abdalian.
