"This disaster is worse than the tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the Haiti earthquake," Maurizio Giuliano, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in one his statements, commenting on the worst floods that Pakistan has seen in the last 62 years. Close to 14 million people have been affected by the floods so far, while it is difficult to put any number once the water subsides, and people try to take stock of their lives. Dr. Babar Zaheer ud Din (11th Entry) sent an email to us with some pictures of the flood. These are 41 pictures in all and may be seen at boston.com. There are indeed many other websites, which show more pictures, telling the story of this huge calamity that has befallen just a few days prior to Ramazan. While many of our Alumni are physically working on the ground, doing a duty for humanity, the whole Abdalian community is saddened by the tragedy and the losses that have come about due to it. |

The funeral prayer of one of the martyrs of Gayari tragedy, Major Zaka-ul-Haq was offered on Wednesday morning in his ancestral area of Chowk Sarwar Shaheed in Muzaffargarh. A large number of army officials and relatives attended the funeral. It may be mentioned that 139 soldiers, including some civilians of 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion, were buried under a huge snow slide on April 7 in Gayari sector near Skardu.
The Pakistan Army had declared all the victims of Gayari as ‘Shuhada’ (martyrs). Aspects related to socio-religious dimensions / implications, requirements to initiate the process of documentation, and reduction of the sufferings of the bereaved families made the Army to take such a step.
Earlier today, the body of another martyred army officer was also unearthed from underneath tonnes of snow in Gayari sector, bringing the total tally of the martyrs to seven. The body was identified as of Lt Colonel Tanveer-ul-Hassan Shaheed. He was the Commander of the “6 Northern Light Infantry (NLI) Battalion.
