Asad Ali Abidi - Back to the Future

Dean Asad ali AbidiIEEE Fellow returns to Pakistan to open tech university

As a high school senior, Asad Abidi found himself at a crossroads. Torn between physics and electrical engineering, he stood at the entrance of his school asking science teachers which they thought offered more exciting opportunities. Engineering was the overwhelming response, so that’s what he went to university to study.

“It was the toss of a coin,” says Abidi, who was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to England at 16. “But I loved engineering completely.” Asad studied at Cadet College Hasanabdal and was from the 15th Entry (1968-1973).

Abdalian Get-together at Lok Virsa

The Abdalians' Association held a get-together and dinner at Lok Virsa on 29th November, 2008. The event was supposed to be the annual dinner and was held on the front lawns of Lok Virsa museum where a marquee was erected specially for the purpose. Normally such a dinner is very well attended by Abdalians, some of whom travel from other cities only to meet old friends. This time around, the event had a very thin attendence, to the extent that the ticket money could not cover the events cost even. Some senior Abdalians from the 11th and 14th entries had to chip in extra money to balance the differential. It will be interesting to see how the event is treated in the accounts of the Association.

Abdalian videos on You Tube

Abdalians, whereas they are spread across the world, are now catching up with internet presence as well . Surely, if video camera's were around in the 60's, 70's and the 80's, we would have had the opportunity to see "high-qulaity" video content here. Here are some videos taken by Abdalians of various events and placed on You Tube. Some of the recordings are not very clear, yet it might jog some memories in some people's minds!  You may require a broadband conenction to view the vieos online. In case you have a slower connection, you may want to download the videos for later viewing.

There are some more videos available, if you read on further. A lot of other videos have been posted on You Tube by Abdalians which you may see at www.youtube.com.

Master Ali Abbass steals the riding show

A little boy, looking like a professional jockey dressed in a maroon jacket and riding hat stole the equestrian show at the Parent's Day held at Cadet College Hasanabdal on 2nd december, 2008. This little boy was Master Ali Abbass Manzoor, a student of class 5 at Beaconhouse School in Wah Cantt. Ali who is only nine years old, is Dr. Faisal Manzoor's son and put up a spectacular show along with the cadets in the equestrian show in the Oval.

Ali Abbass started riding when he was only seven years old. For about six months he had been practicing with the College Riding Club. It was then, that the Principal spotted him and invited young Ali to perform alongside the College Riding Squad as a special guest. It was indeed an honour for Ali, being a son of an Abdalian and whos eight other uncles also happen to be Abdalians, to be able to perform on the Parent's Day. While Dr. Faisal Manzoor, his wife and his brothers watched Ali perform with a lot of pride, the whole audience present their showed their admiration for this little boy as he raced and made his horse jump all the hurdles with extreme ease, as if it was really a child's play.

Well done Ali! There are some more pictures of Ali, which may be seen in the picture gallery. Please remember that you must be logged in as an Abdalian Alumni to be able to view them.

Four Abdalians announce scholarships

Speaking at the annual dinner and get-together of Abdalians at Lok Virsa on Saturday, the President of Abdalians' Association, Syed Ashfaq Hussain announced that four Abdalians had expressed their interest to give scholarships to needy students.

The Abdalian's who announced the award of the scholarships, included Syed Aqil Shah (11th Entry), Maj. Gen. Sikander Khan (1st Entry), Maj. Gen. Burki and Dr. Shoaib Shafi (17th Entry). It appeared that the announcement was made in haste, as no one said anything about the amount of the scholarship.

Scholarships can be of any amount, depending on the model that one creates. It can be a fully paid scholarship, which will mean that all expenses will be covered under the scholarship programme, including tuition, boarding and lodging, clothing, pocket money etc.
